Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith
Under the Banner of Heaven - This book is the history of the Mormons - the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - and mentions how two brothers in a Fundamentalist Mormon church believed they were told by God to kill a young woman and her baby. I'm rather engrossed in my second reading of this book now, in September 2014. it tells about how Joseph Smith, the founder of the church, found the golden tablets that formed the Book of Mormon and how he started the church.
They are persecuted mainly because of their belief in allowing the men of their church to have multiple wives. They believe it is their divine right, as was told to them by God. Joseph Smith is killed in Illinois by a mob, Brigham Young takes over and moves the people to what is now the Salt Lake City of Utah. It's also about many of the spin-off Mormon religious groups in the United States.
I don't really see anything wrong with men having multiple wives as long as women would also be allowed to have multiple husbands. The main church of the Mormans don't do that any more. Only the fringe groups. I am not a Mormon; I am in no religion myself. I am spiritual. I live a simple life in Northern New Mexico with my one husband and our three cats. I will probably read this book again and again.
Other books I own by Jon Krakauer: Into Thin Air and Into the Wild. I feel he is a really good writer and he keeps my interest throughout the books I've read by him. I will read them all again.
