What is Meditation?
I would assume many people know what meditation is these days. It is certainly not necessarily a guru or yogi sitting alone on a mountain contemplating the world or his navel. Anybody can meditate. You don't have to pay a lot either. There are many good meditation videos on YouTube.
One does generally sit quietly in a safe space with no distractions - no TV, no radio, no iPhone or iPad, cell phone off, kids off in another room with another adult or relative. As I said no distractions. Sit in a comfortable chair with your legs up on another chair or stool, if you want. Or sit in bed with a bunch of pillows, or one large pillow, to lean on. Lying in a bed is even okay for certain types of meditation. You don't have to pay exorbitant amounts of money to learn to meditate. You don't have to do it in a group. Or you can if you wish.
Sometimes you can look at a candle, repeat a mantra (a meaningless sound) inside your head, or repeat a mantra or other sound out loud.

I did the Transcendental Meditation technique for over 30 years and have practiced many other types of meditation over the years. Find one that you yourself like, not all of them are for everyone. Transcendental Meditation is definitely not for everyone. Like I said, find something you like and try to stick to it and do it every day. For some people like me it's not that easy to stick to something. Sometimes you may get bored of one type; feel free to find another one. That's just my opinion, of course. I've got many types of psychological labels placed on me but I do find it difficult to keep something up these days. I try different things.
People who do meditate think that their way is the best, as is often the case about many things. Find the best for you and don't listen to other people who try to change your mind. Just listen to your own inner feelings and intuition.
