Thermals:
Sibley, D. A. (2001). The Sibley
Guide to Bird Life & Behavior.
What it says: Riding thermals. Hawks and other large soaring migrants find column of warm air (thermals) nd ride the rising air currents in a spiral that takes the bird high into the sky. From these heights, the migrant glides slowly downward in its intended direction, searching for another thermal to help it continue its journey.
